Rewire Festival 2027 – The Hague, Netherlands
Overview
Rewire Festival is an annual international festival for adventurous music held in the city centre of The Hague, Netherlands. Since its inception in 2011, the festival has become one of the most respected platforms in Europe for forward-thinking and genre-bending music, showcasing a microcosm of experimental and boundary-pushing sounds.
The festival presents a broad program with a focus on contemporary electronic music, neo-classical, new jazz, experimental pop, sound art and multidisciplinary collaborations. Across multiple days, Rewire transforms the city into a temporary experimental hub, utilizing a diverse range of venues including concert halls, theatres, churches, night clubs, galleries, former power stations and public space.
Rewire is not a traditional field festival with a single main stage. Instead, it is a city festival where audiences walk between historic churches, modern dance theatres, pop venues and intimate galleries, discovering more than one hundred concerts, commissioned works, club nights, installations, talks, screenings and workshops. The program brings together internationally acclaimed artists, local talent and specially commissioned new works that are often presented as world premieres.

What Makes This Event Special
A City As A Venue: Rewire takes place in the heart of The Hague, with all venues located within walking distance of each other. The experience of moving from a 15th-century church to an underground club to a modern theatre within minutes is central to the festival identity.
Adventurous Curation: The lineup stretches from contemporary classical and avant-garde vocalists to underground club pioneers, experimental pop, sound art and new jazz. Past editions have featured artists ranging from Slowdive and Swans to Arca, Jeff Mills, Laurie Spiegel, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Actress and Suzanne Ciani.
Commissioned Works and Premieres: Rewire is known for commissioning new works and collaborations that are made specifically for the festival. These include interdisciplinary performances combining music, dance, visual art and technology, often produced in collaboration with venues like Korzo and Amare.
Intimate and Immersive Settings: Performances are programmed to match their venue. Neo-classical and choral works reverberate in Grote Kerk and Lutherse Kerk, electronic club sets take over Paard and Concordia, while sound installations occupy The Grey Space in the Middle and public spaces.
Year-Round Community: Beyond the festival weekend, Rewire runs a year-round program of concerts, talks and education projects under the Rewire x Korzo series, workshops during school vacations and an outreach program that keeps the community engaged throughout the year.
Lineup / Featured Artists
The full lineup for the upcoming edition is announced in phases during the preceding months, with the first major announcement already confirmed.
Diamanda Galás: Avant-garde icon and legendary vocalist, confirmed for a Netherlands-exclusive performance. Known for her extraordinary four-octave vocal range and politically charged, dramatic performances, her presence marks a major highlight of the program.
Forward-Thinking Electronic Artists: The festival traditionally presents pioneers of contemporary electronic music, including live AV sets, textural club music, sonic theory-fiction and experimental dance music. Previous years have included artists like Actress, LSDXOXO, ABADIR, ex_libris, DeForrest Brown Jr. and Sijya.
Neo-Classical and Experimental Pop: Rewire consistently showcases artists who blur classical and pop boundaries. Recent highlights have included Joanne Robertson accompanied by Oliver Coates, as well as ensembles performing in churches with gleaming clarity before hushed, spellbound audiences.
New Jazz and Improvised Music: The program features cutting-edge jazz, free improvisation and cross-genre collaborations that bring together acoustic instruments, electronics and voice.
Sound Art and Installations: In collaboration with artist-run platform iii and venues like The Grey Space in the Middle, Rewire presents Proximity Music, a tour of installations scattered across the city that engage with the senses, the body, instruments, machines, ritual and play.
Local and International Talent: Alongside international headliners, Rewire provides a platform for Dutch and Hague-based artists, with stages at Korzo, Paard, Amare, Koninklijke Schouwburg, Theater aan het Spui, Koorenhuis, Het Magazijn, Zaal 3, West and Concordia.
Event Experience
Venue Hopping: The core experience is walking between venues. Attendees receive a timetable and map and craft their own journey, moving from a meditative concert in Nieuwe Kerk to a high-energy club night at Paard, all within a short stroll.
Day and Night Program: Afternoons are dedicated to talks, screenings, workshops, listening sessions and installations, many of which are free and open to the public. Evenings focus on seated concerts in theatres and churches, while nights culminate in club programs that run past midnight.
Listening Culture: Unlike many festivals, Rewire fosters deep listening. Audiences are attentive, venues are acoustically treated, and performances in churches like Grote Kerk offer reverberant clarity where every detail is audible.
Discourse and Education: The festival includes artist talks, panel discussions, education projects and workshops that explore the ideas behind the music. During autumn vacation, Rewire organizes workshops for young people focused on sound creation and experimentation.
Food and City Life: Because the festival takes place in the city centre, visitors can enjoy The Hague’s cafes, restaurants and bars between shows. The festival itself does not operate a single food court, instead integrating with the existing city infrastructure.
Documentary and Reflections: Each edition is documented through a short documentary and a zine, capturing the atmosphere and providing deeper context on performances and themes.

Over subsequent years, the festival grew rapidly in both scale and reputation. By 2015, it expanded to five venues and stages across multiple days, hosting artists like Godspeed You! Black Emperor. In 2018, the festival spread across twelve different venues including two churches, the old power station De Electriciteitsfabriek, local pop temple Paard, Korzo, Koorenhuis, The Grey Space, Het Magazijn, Zaal 3 and West, establishing its signature city festival format.
During 2021, following an online edition, Rewire organized an offline edition across September, showcasing forward-thinking sounds at familiar venues such as Paard, Korzo, Koninklijke Schouwburg, Lutherse Kerk and Theater aan het Spui, as well as outdoors and in public space, while also launching Proximity Music installations in collaboration with iii.

Wear Comfortable Shoes: You will walk several kilometers each day between churches, theatres and clubs. Comfortable shoes and a light waterproof jacket are essential for moving between venues in changeable weather.
Embrace Deep Listening: Many concerts, especially in churches, require quiet and focus. Arrive early, silence your phone and allow yourself to fully immerse in the sound. Church performances often have limited capacity and no late entry.
Combine Music and City: Take advantage of the city festival format by planning meals, coffee breaks and museum visits between shows. The festival is designed to be experienced as part of The Hague, not isolated from it.
Book Accommodation Early: The Hague has limited hotel capacity in the immediate city centre. Accommodation fills up quickly for the festival weekend, so early booking is highly recommended, especially for affordable options near venues.

Attendee Experiences
Attendees consistently describe Rewire as one of the best festivals in the Netherlands for discovering new international talent. The intimate setting of churches like Grote Kerk and Lutherse Kerk creates memorable moments where experimental music reverberates with gleaming clarity before hushed, spellbound audiences.
Many visitors praise the contrast between venues. One moment you are in a glittering pop temple like Paard for a high-energy club set, the next you are in Korzo Theatre for a work of sonic theory-fiction and live electronics, followed by a vivid live AV set of gritty textural club music at Concordia. This variety is cited as the festival’s greatest strength.

The festival attracts a curious, open-minded audience of musicians, artists, students and adventurous listeners who are respectful and attentive. Conversations between shows, whether in The Grey Space or at Grote Markt terraces, are considered part of the experience.
International guests note the ease of navigation. Because all venues are within walking distance, it is possible to see eight to ten performances in a single day without rushing. The city festival format also allows for natural breaks to explore The Hague’s museums, beach and culinary scene between concerts.
