Overview

Grauzone Festival is a multidisciplinary underground festival rooted in The Hague, Netherlands, that has grown into one of Europe’s most respected platforms for post-punk, darkwave, coldwave, EBM, minimal wave, experimental electronics, industrial, noise, psychedelia, and contemporary underground art. The festival is built as a city festival, with all venues clustered in the historic centre and walkable within a few minutes of each other. PAARD on Prinsegracht serves as the main venue, ticket desk, and central meeting point, while The Grey Space In The Middle, Het Koorenhuis, Zwarte Ruiter, Lutherse Kerk, and GR8 expand the program into galleries, churches, and intimate club rooms.

What defines Grauzone is the way it treats music, visual art, film, talks, and record culture as equal parts of one continuous curatorial vision. A single wristband gives access to the entire program, allowing attendees to create their own route between live bands, DJ sets, film screenings, art exhibitions under the Graukunst name, symposium conversations, and a dedicated record and merchandise market. The scale is intentionally human, with limited capacities that keep performances close and direct. It attracts a dedicated international audience of musicians, artists, collectors, label owners, and long-time fans who value discovery over spectacle.

What Makes This Event Special

Curatorial Integrity: Grauzone programs for quality, originality, experimentation, idiosyncrasy, urgency, inclusion and diversity rather than trends. The lineup connects the foundations of post-punk and industrial music with current developments in wave, darkwave, goth, shoegaze, EBM, and avant-garde electronics.

Multidisciplinary Identity: The festival never was only concerts. Alongside the live program, attendees can visit Graukunst exhibitions featuring photography, sculpture, painting, installation, collage, video and performance, attend film screenings of rare documentaries and artist films, join symposium talks with writers and artists, and dig through crates at the GR8 market.

City Centre Immersion: There is no isolated festival field. The festival lives inside the city itself. You step out of a packed show at PAARD, walk two minutes to a gallery set at The Grey Space, then cross to a church performance, encountering artists and audience members in the same streets, cafes, and bars.

Rarity and First Appearances: Grauzone has built a reputation for booking artists who are performing in the Netherlands or Europe for the very first time, alongside special solo performances, full live band debuts, exclusive wave sets, and custom DJ sets prepared only for this festival.

Equality and Access: The festival does not operate premium tier upgrades that separate audiences. Everyone shares the same rooms and the same experience. A discounted young ticket is offered for younger attendees, and local Hague acts are always part of the lineup alongside international legends.

Intimacy Over Scale: With venues that hold hundreds rather than thousands, performances feel direct. Sound quality at PAARD is highly regarded, while smaller spaces offer gallery-like listening conditions where subtle electronic sets can be fully appreciated.

Lineup / Featured Artists

Core Wave and Post-Punk Pillars: She Past Away, Martin Dupont, Cold Cave performing a special Cremations set, Au Pairs featuring members of Big Joanie and The Thurston Moore Group, Iceage, and Curses with a full live band form the backbone of this edition, representing multiple generations of wave and post-punk.

Darkwave, Gothic Americana and Spectral Voices: Mareux returning for only his second Netherlands appearance after breaking through with The Perfect Girl, Marissa Nadler returning after a previous Grauzone appearance with her blend of dark folk, gothic Americana, ambient and shoegaze, Ora Cogan merging psych-pop, indie folk and gothic country, and Rosa Anschutz bringing contemporary gothic songwriting.

Art-Rock, Punk and Heavy Psychedelia: The Velveteers making their Netherlands debut with a two-drummer lineup after touring with Guns N Roses and The Black Keys, Bande a Part with UK art-rock, Holy Motors, Dana with US noise-punk, Betton Arme bringing politically charged French-language Oi from Montreal, and Cardiel mixing stoner rock, psychedelia, grunge and heavy dub.

Industrial, EBM and Electronic Program: Phase Fatale performing a special wave set, Esther Dune delivering a specially prepared wave and EBM set from The Hague, Buzz Kull, Theo Vandenhoff for the first time in Europe, Ofra, Night In Athens, Mothermary, Unhuman and Petra Flurr, Laura Krieg, Mercy Girl, Ghost Cop, and the extended Grauzone DJ Team.

Regional and Global Underground: Jakuzi and Ductape representing Istanbul, Aurat from Los Angeles fronted by Pakistani vocalist Azeka Kamal with Urdu-language industrial electro-punk, Annie-Claude Deschenes, Katie Bitchcoin, Mye_Taai, Destiny Bond, and The Woman. Many artists in this lineup are appearing in Europe for the first time, and the program will expand with a dedicated Sunday program of Graukunst, film and performance plus more local Hague names still to be announced.

Event Experience

Concert Flow: The main concert halls are Grote Zaal and Kleine Zaal at PAARD, plus the concert space at The Grey Space. Sets are staggered to allow movement, but each venue has a strict maximum capacity. The experience rewards curiosity, as moving early to a smaller venue often leads to unexpected discoveries.

Club Nights: After live concerts, the focus shifts to CLUB GRAUZONE style programming, with DJs focusing on dark electronic underground sounds from wave to new beat, from minimal to electro, from body music to early EBM. These sets run late and are included in the weekend ticket.

Graukunst Art Program: The art section explores black as a color, purpose, medium, and meaning. Previous presentations have included retrospective exhibitions, duo shows, group installations, and site-specific performances spread across galleries and non-traditional spaces.

Film and Talks: The film program screens music documentaries, experimental films, and archival material linked to post-punk history and contemporary underground scenes. The symposium brings together writers, critics, and musicians for conversations about books, scene histories, and cultural shifts.

GR8 Market: GR8 is the central hub for vinyl, label releases, zines, books, and festival merchandise. Labels and artists often do signings and informal meet-ups here. It functions as a daytime gathering point between shows.

Logistics of Experience: Upon arrival, you exchange your ticket for a wristband at PAARD. The wristband must be worn immediately and grants access to all venues in the full program. Cloakrooms and lockers are available at PAARD for a small fee, with limited availability.

Event History

From Club Night to Festival: Grauzone started as a club night dedicated to dark electronic underground sounds and gradually grew into a festival. The name refers to the grey zone between genres, between music and art, between past and present.

Relocation and Growth: After early editions in Amsterdam, the festival moved to The Hague and found its home at PAARD, Prins 27, and The Grey Space. Over successive editions, it expanded from a compact weekend to a three-day multidisciplinary event with five to six venues, adding symposium, film program, exhibition, and record fair.

Past Editions Highlights: Previous lineups have included Cabaret Voltaire, Michael Gira, IDLES, Motorama, Drab Majesty, Schwefelgelb, Shame, Damo Suzuki performing with members of Kikagaku Moyo, Bo Ningen, and Minami Deutsch, Stephen Mallinder, Linea Aspera, Shellac, Lebanon Hanover, Blixa Bargeld, Ancient Methods, Snapped Ankles, Lee Ranaldo, Rendez-Vous, The Messthetics, The Monochrome Set, and A Certain Ratio. The festival is noted for mixing pioneers with emerging acts.

Resilience and Continuity: Grauzone was one of the few festivals that actually took place during a challenging period for live events, then rescheduled an edition from winter to spring to ensure it could happen. The multidisciplinary nature, where music, art and film complement each other, gave it flexibility to adapt.

Current Chapter: The present edition marks the fourteenth edition of the festival and continues its distinctive mix of post-punk, wave, experimental music, underground culture, film and visual arts, with an emphasis on quality over quantity.

Club-focused early editions had weekend tickets at $30.00 to $60.00 including acts like The Monochrome Set and A Certain Ratio.

Night Tickets and Door Sales: Tickets for the night program will also be available at the door as long as not sold out. If you have a regular weekend ticket, you do not need a night ticket.

Wristband and Entry: You must exchange your ticket for a wristband only at PAARD. Wristbands are applied immediately and must be collected personally. No need to print your ticket, mobile scan is accepted.

Resale and Refunds: The festival does not refund tickets. For resale, use TicketSwap, the trusted resale partner. Do not buy from unverified sellers on social platforms.

Tips Before You Go

Collect Wristband Early: Go to PAARD ticket desk when it opens in the afternoon to avoid queues before headline shows. Personal collection only.

Plan for Capacity: Each venue has a maximum capacity and will be busy, especially PAARD Grote Zaal and Grey Space. Arrive early for must-see acts. If a room is full, use it as an opportunity to discover another act nearby rather than waiting.

Pack Smart: Bring a small bag, as cloakrooms at PAARD have limited lockers and cost a small fee. Other venues have very limited storage. Comfortable shoes are essential for cobblestones and repeated walks.

Ear Protection and Layers: Many shows are loud in intimate rooms, so high-fidelity earplugs are recommended. Bring warm and water-resistant layers for moving outdoors between venues.

Stay Informed: Check the official website and social channels for timetable release, day ticket availability, and last-minute program changes. The full day schedule is released closer to the festival.

Respect Venues: Some venues are churches and cultural centres. Respect their rules, keep noise low when exiting late, and follow staff instructions regarding capacity.

Attendee Experiences

Curated Discovery: Returning attendees often describe Grauzone as feeling like a record collection come to life, where the lineup is curated with deep knowledge of wave and post-punk lineages. The ability to see a foundational act and then walk two minutes to catch a debuting band is frequently mentioned as unique.

Sound and Atmosphere: PAARD’s halls are praised for balanced sound and clear sightlines despite being intimate. The Grey Space offers a more gallery-like listening environment where subtle electronic and experimental sets can be appreciated in detail.

Community Without Division: Because there are no VIP areas, artists, writers, label owners, and audience members share the same bars, record fair, and streets. Many visitors mention that conversations at GR8 or Grote Markt lead to discovering new artists.

Art as Breathing Space: Attendees appreciate that Graukunst exhibitions and film screenings provide a slower pace between intense live shows, making the weekend feel like a cultural city break rather than only a concert marathon.

City Integration: The central location allows visitors to step out for coffee, a museum visit, or a beach tram ride and return quickly. This integration with The Hague is often cited as making Grauzone more relaxed than isolated festival sites.

FAQ's

What is included in a weekend ticket and how does venue hopping work?

A weekend ticket includes access to the full program across all venues for all three days, covering live concerts, DJ sets, Graukunst exhibitions, film program, symposium talks, and the GR8 record fair. After exchanging your ticket for a wristband at PAARD, you can move freely between PAARD, The Grey Space In The Middle, Het Koorenhuis, Zwarte Ruiter, Lutherse Kerk, and GR8, all within walking distance.

How does the wristband collection work and can someone collect for me?

Wristbands are collected only at the ticket desk at PAARD and cannot be collected at other venues. You must collect it personally because staff apply it immediately upon scanning your ticket, and it must be worn for the entire festival. There is no need to print your ticket since mobile scans are accepted, but the wristband itself is non-transferable.

Are there discounted tickets for younger visitors and how are they verified?

Yes, there is a young weekend ticket priced lower than the regular weekend ticket, intended for attendees aged twenty-five or younger. It grants identical access to the full program across all venues. At the entrance, staff check the ticket together with a valid photo ID to confirm age, so you should carry an official ID that shows your date of birth.

What happens if a venue is full and how should I plan my schedule?

Each venue has a strict maximum capacity for safety and comfort, and during peak times rooms can reach capacity, especially at PAARD. If a venue is full, door staff will temporarily hold entry until space frees up. The festival advises arriving early for priority acts and treating a full room as a chance to discover another artist nearby, since all venues are only minutes apart.

Can I buy tickets at the door and what about resale if I cannot attend?

Tickets for the night program are available at the door as long as the show is not sold out, but weekend tickets often sell out in advance. If you have a regular weekend ticket you do not need a separate night ticket. The festival does not refund tickets, but secure resale is possible through TicketSwap, which is the official trusted partner, and buying from unverified sellers is strongly discouraged.
