Overview

Le Guess Who? Festival 2026 is the 20th anniversary edition of one of Europe’s most adventurous and internationally respected music festivals, taking over the city of Utrecht for four days of genre-defying performances. More than 150 artists will play across concert halls, churches, theaters, clubs, warehouses and other spaces around Utrecht, making it a true city-wide festival rather than a single-site event.

Founded with a mission to bring acts to the Netherlands which have never played there before, Le Guess Who? has grown into a leading international festival known for its unparalleled presentation of genre-challenging music. The festival is independent, artist-focused, and intentionally diverse, with a philosophy that extends its platform to genre-defying artists while providing fair representation regardless of view-count or online presence, putting the substance of music at the forefront of curation.

The 2026 edition is built around guest curation and special programs. Four guest curators shape large parts of the lineup with diverse selections, while the festival’s own curation adds ambient, experimental, electronic, jazz, global, and avant-garde voices. From seated church concerts to late-night club collaborations, every venue changes the feel of what you are hearing.

For two decades, Le Guess Who? has remained committed to celebrating cultural exchange and facilitating conversations through music that transcends borders, and the 20th anniversary program deepens that commitment with expanded free programming, a 24-hour dub marathon, club nights, and community-focused city projects.

What Makes This Event Special

Curated by Artists, Not Just Bookers: Le Guess Who? invites guest curators to shape the lineup with their own artistic lenses. For the 20th anniversary, curators include aja monet, KMRU, Los Thuthanaka and Tropical Fuck Storm. This model ensures each stage feels like a bespoke concert series rather than a generic lineup, introducing audiences to niche sounds from artists like Gigi Masin and Melt-Banana.

City-Wide Soundscape: The festival takes place across various Utrecht venues as well as at the central hub, TivoliVredenburg, which is home to six individual spaces varying from a dizzyingly large Grote Zaal to the much tighter, more colourful Pandora Foyer. You walk from a historic church to a warehouse club, from a theater to a basement, with the city itself becoming the festival ground.

20th Anniversary Programs: As part of the anniversary festivities, special programs are presented including 24 HOUR DUB, which is a 24-hour session of continuous dub sounds at KABUL à GoGo. The program brings together artists, sound-system culture, dub pioneers and newer bass-focused acts for one long session.

U? Free City Program: Le Guess Who?’s free city program, U?, runs alongside the main ticketed festival. It focuses on Utrecht’s local and creative communities with performances, exhibitions, communal meals, talks, educational activities and participatory events. It makes the festival accessible even without a full pass.

Unparalleled Diversity: The Line of Best Fit and The Quietus have described the festival as the most diverse, open and inspiring festival out there and an event the world needs. The curation deliberately blends experimental electronic, post-rock, world-music influences, spiritual jazz, noise rock, ambient, and global underground.

Lineup / Featured Artists

The full Le Guess Who? 2026 program stretches well beyond a normal headliner list and is curated to encourage discovery. The festival has already announced guest curators and first waves of artists.

Guest Curators and Their Worlds

aja monet: American poet and activist returning after her highlight performance as part of Arooj Aftab’s curation in a previous edition. Her program explores themes of resistance, love and the inexhaustible quest for joy, with performances expected from British musician and composer SHABAKA, Afropunk duo Tshegue, Palestinian Sound Archive, Palestinian MC singer and producer Shadia Mansour, R&B and neo soul musician Cody ChesnuTT presenting MAKING SCIENCE SIMPLE, and more.

Los Thuthanaka: American sibling duo curating a lineup which explores Indigenous Andean culture through a contemporary experimental, electronic and psychedelic lens, featuring Italian ambient musician and composer Gigi Masin, Japanese noise rock band Melt-Banana, and more.

Tropical Fuck Storm: Australian art punk band offering a curated lineup that is a little wild, combining sonic inspirations including guitarist Bill Orcutt, NYC guitarist and composer Chuck Roth, Japanese avant-garde sound artist FUJI|||||||||||TA, and Mark Fell.

KMRU: Sound artist Joseph Kamaru, aka KMRU, presenting his eight-hour sound performance WAI8, with nine performers including French producer Aho Ssan, Norwegian artist Carmen Villain, Japanese composer Koshiro Hino, and Elvin Brandhi.

Festival-Curated Additions

Additionally, Le Guess Who? has curated a program of artists including American ambient-experimental musician Ana Roxanne, Argentine singer-songwriter Juana Molina, ambient dream-pop artist Grouper, Japanese composer and saxophonist Yasuaki Shimizu, British electronic producer Loraine James, spiritual dub duo Holy Tongue, Ouri, Tropical Fuck Storm, and many more.

24 HOUR DUB Lineup

The dub marathon showcases Mad Professor and The Scientist, The Bug vs Ghost Dubs, CARISTA, Greentea Selecta, Scientist, Mad Professor & Sista Aisha, and other sound-system legends. It underscores the festival’s commitment to deep-cut genre celebrations.

Club Collaborations

The festival’s club night with WAS. includes Eris Drew b2b Octo Octa, Hervé, and jannah, following their closing set at Orbit’s Zodiac stage in a previous year. This collaboration extends the festival into Utrecht’s night culture.

Event Experience

Immersive Venue Hopping: Le Guess Who? isn’t the kind of festival where you stand in one field all weekend. Each venue changes the feel of what you are seeing. A seated ambient set in Jacobikerk feels entirely different from a loud set in EKKO or a late-night session in WAS.

Timetable as Discovery Tool: The official festival describes more than 150 artists performing across pop venues, theaters, churches, clubs, warehouses and other spaces. The best approach is to pick two or three artists you refuse to miss, then leave space between must-see acts for walking, queuing, eating, or staying longer at something unexpectedly good.

Wristband and App System: You need to exchange your 4-Day or Day Pass for a festival wristband at TivoliVredenburg. The official festival app is essential for the current timetable, program updates, venue information and your own saved schedule. Turn on notifications for last-minute changes.

Late Nights and Deep Listening: Programming runs from early afternoon seated concerts to late-night club programs. Night venues have stricter rules, with WAS being 21+ and De Helling and KABUL à GoGo being 18+ for relevant night access, while children up to 12 can generally attend daytime programs with a parent or guardian free of charge.

Community and Grants: The festival cooperates with The Dutch Council for Refugees, Buddy to Buddy and NewBees for the Grant an Entry initiative, which gives visitors the option to buy an additional day ticket for newcomers residing in the Netherlands who would otherwise lack financial means.

Location & Venue

Le Guess Who? takes over venues across Utrecht rather than using one closed festival site. The official festival describes more than 150 artists performing across pop venues, theaters, churches, clubs, warehouses and other spaces.

Main Venues

TivoliVredenburg: Major concert complex and festival hub and wristband pickup point. Located at Vredenburgkade 11, near Utrecht Centraal. Home to six individual spaces including Grote Zaal, Ronda, Pandora, Cloud Nine, Hertz and more.

EKKO: Intimate club on Bemuurde Weerd for smaller rooms and niche acts, long associated with underground and experimental bookings.

De Helling: Music venue outside the immediate center at Helling 7, with 400 to 2,000 capacity spaces, hosting heavier and late-night acts.

Jacobikerk: Historic church used for seated or acoustic performances, ideal for ambient, modern composition and vocal-focused sets.

Stadsschouwburg Utrecht: Theater venue providing larger theatrical settings for curated projects and special performances.

WAS.: Club at Tractieweg 41 hosting night program and official Le Guess Who? collaborations, 21+ after-hours.

KABUL à GoGo: Club and cultural space hosting the 24 HOUR DUB program, 18+ for night access.

Theater Kikker: Smaller theater for intimate performances and talks.

Most first-time visitors quickly learn that festival venue does not mean one location here. Some performances happen around central Utrecht, while others require more walking, cycling or public transport.

Event History

Le Guess Who? began in the late 2000s as an independent festival for independent music which aims to bring acts to the Netherlands which have never played there before. Its early editions were modest, with four-day festival passes originally priced at 100 euros and day tickets at 30 to 35 euros, featuring strands like a 24-hour Drone Fest topped by Sunn O’s Stephen O’Malley, Tim Hecker and William Basinski.

The inception of TivoliVredenburg transformed the festival. Its predecessor, Tivoli Oudegracht, closed with spectacular performances from Le Guess Who?, and the new complex gave the festival a central hub with six halls. Alongside TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht also developed two more Tivoli venues, De Helling and Leidsche Rijn, expanding capacity.

Over the years the festival grew to become a leading international festival. Editions featured curations by Swans frontman Michael Gira, Austin Psych Fest, Arooj Aftab, and collaborations with artists such as St Vincent, Swans, Autechre, Wilco, Dinosaur Jr, Devendra Banhart, Julianna Barwick, and many others. The festival consistently emphasized fair representation, cultural exchange, and genre-challenging bookings.

By its 17th edition, the festival was taking over the entire city center of Utrecht, performing in multiple clubs, bars and pop-up venues alongside international acts, with Pakistani Grammy-winning artist Arooj Aftab as guest curator bringing prominent artists from the MENA region. The 20th anniversary edition in 2026 marks two decades of this ethos.

Getting to the Event

By Air: For many international visitors, the easiest arrival airport is Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. From there, direct trains connect toward Utrecht Centraal in about 30 minutes, with frequent service.

By Rail: Utrecht Centraal is the central hub for the Netherlands and useful because you are arriving right by the city center, public transport and TivoliVredenburg. International rail from Germany, Belgium and France connects via ICE, Thalys and Eurostar services with a change in Amsterdam or directly to Utrecht.

By Public Transport in Utrecht: Central Utrecht is compact enough that several venues can be linked on foot, which is usually less stressful than constantly checking bus times. Buses and trams help when venues sit farther away, particularly for De Helling and WAS.

By Bike: Utrecht is described by the municipality as easy to travel around by bike and well connected by public transport. Cycling is a primary local mode, with rental bikes via OV-fiets at Utrecht Centraal and private rentals in the center.

Walking: Walking handles a lot of Le Guess Who?. Central venues like TivoliVredenburg, Stadsschouwburg, Jacobikerk and EKKO are within 10 to 15 minutes of each other.

Check Before Travel: Check NS and international rail operators close to departure because schedules and engineering work can change, especially on weekends.

Where to Stay Nearby

Utrecht City Center: This is the easiest choice if your budget allows it. Walking back after a late show beats worrying about the last train. Options around Domplein, Oudegracht and Vredenburg are within 5 to 10 minutes of TivoliVredenburg and other central venues. Demand is very high during the festival.

Near Utrecht Centraal: Staying close to the station works well if you are arriving by rail or plan to travel elsewhere during the trip. TivoliVredenburg is also nearby, and hotels at Jaarbeursplein offer modern business-class comfort.

Nearby Towns: Do not ignore places just outside Utrecht if central accommodation has become expensive. Towns like Amersfoort, Hilversum, Zeist and Houten are 10 to 20 minutes by train and often have better availability.

Amsterdam as Base: Amsterdam gives you far more hotel choice, but a late finish in Utrecht followed by a train journey back to Amsterdam gets old quickly over several festival days. If Le Guess Who? is the main reason for the trip, Utrecht usually makes more sense.

Booking Tips: Book early. The 4-Day Pass and Friday Pass have already sold out in previous months, indicating strong demand. Hotels near the center sell out 3 to 4 months in advance. Consider apartments or apart-hotels for longer stays and group travel.

Things to Do Before or After the Event

Dom Tower and Oudegracht: Climb Utrecht’s Dom Tower for panoramic city views, then stroll along the Oudegracht canal with its unique wharf cellars now housing cafes and boutiques.

Museums: Visit Centraal Museum for art and city history, Museum Catharijneconvent for religious art in a medieval monastery, and Nijntje Museum for families.

U? Free Program: Even with a main ticket, explore U? city program on the weekend. Expect performances, exhibitions, communal meals, talks and educational activities focused on Utrecht’s local and creative communities.

Cafe and Terrace Culture: Utrecht’s Neude square and Ledig Erf offer lively terraces for afternoon breaks between sets, while the wharf cafes along Oudegracht provide waterside seating.

Day Trips: Utrecht is centrally located. Combine the festival with day trips to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, or the UNESCO-listed Kinderdijk windmills, all within one hour by train.

Record Shopping and Art Spaces: Visit local record stores like Plato and Beggars Banquet-adjacent shops, and check independent galleries in the city center that often host satellite exhibitions during the festival.

Restaurants & Dining Nearby

Around TivoliVredenburg and Vredenburgkade: Numerous restaurants cluster around Vredenburgplein and Smakkelaarshoek, offering quick bites before shows. Options include casual Dutch bistros, Indonesian rice tables, and international street food.

Oudegracht Wharf Restaurants: The canal wharfs house atmospheric restaurants with terraces just above water level, ideal for dinner between afternoon and evening sets. Expect Italian, modern Dutch, and fusion menus.

Neude and Janskerkhof: Two squares near central venues with dense restaurant offerings, from vegetarian and vegan-focused cafes to traditional brown cafes serving bitterballen and local beers.

Vegan and Vegetarian: Utrecht is known for plant-based dining, with several fully vegan restaurants within walking distance of TivoliVredenburg, aligning with the festival’s inclusive ethos.

Late Night: After late shows at WAS. or De Helling, late-night snack bars and kebab shops near Utrecht Centraal and Voorstraat remain open, catering to post-concert crowds.

Coffee: Specialty coffee bars like Black Label, Village Coffee and Koffie Leute are popular for daytime recovery and are located near EKKO and city center venues.

Tips Before You Go

Plan Venue Geography First: Do not assume every venue sits five minutes away from TivoliVredenburg. Some central locations are easy to reach on foot, others need more time, cycling or bus. Check the next venue before the current set ends.

Use the App and Save Backups: Install the official festival app before your first day for the current timetable, program updates, venue information and saved schedule. Take a screenshot of your schedule as backup and turn on notifications for changes.

Comfort Over Fashion: Comfortable shoes matter more than festival-fashion perfection. You will spend a lot of time walking between venues, standing and moving around town. November in the Netherlands can bring cool, wet weather, so bring layers and a rain jacket.

Power and Protection: A power bank is useful for the festival app, maps and digital tickets. Ear protection is worth carrying, especially for several loud sets or late club programs, as some venues are small and intense.

Room Capacity: Popular rooms can fill even if you are on time. Being technically on time does not always mean you will walk straight in. Have a backup plan for each slot: if one venue is packed, know what else is playing nearby.

Check Age and Accessibility: Accessibility differs from venue to venue. TivoliVredenburg has a low-stimulus space, while KABUL à GoGo is currently listed as not wheelchair accessible and without an accessible toilet. Age rules vary, with WAS. being 21+ and De Helling and KABUL à GoGo being 18+ for night access.

Deep Listening Focus: Attendees consistently describe Le Guess Who? as the most diverse, open and inspiring festival out there. The seated church and theater shows encourage focused, attentive listening rather than constant background chatter, creating memorable moments for ambient and experimental sets.

Walking between venues through historic Utrecht adds to the experience.

Curatorial Depth: Guest curator programs feel like mini-festivals within the festival, with each curator bringing their own artistic lenses. The 24-hour dub marathon, drone fests, and sound-system culture strands create immersive deep dives.

International Community: The festival draws thousands of international visitors, filling hotels, restaurants and local transport, while the multi-venue approach spreads spending across the city’s districts, creating a welcoming, global crowd united by curiosity.

FAQ's

Do I need a 4-Day Pass to attend Le Guess Who? Festival?

No, you can attend without a 4-Day Pass. While the 4-Day Pass offers unlimited access to all shows during the four days, day passes may still be available depending on current inventory. The festival also has several programs that do not require a regular full-festival ticket, including the U? free city program and the Sound & Culture Summit. Separate venue passes are available for selected programs such as 24 HOUR DUB and WAS. club night.

How does the wristband and venue system work?

A standard festival ticket is not the final thing you show at every venue. You need to exchange your 4-Day or Day Pass for a festival wristband at TivoliVredenburg before entering most venues. TivoliVredenburg is the major hub and also where regular ticket holders collect wristbands. Once you have the wristband, you can access the various venues across Utrecht according to your ticket type, subject to room capacity.

What makes the 20th anniversary edition different?

The 20th anniversary edition features four guest curators shaping large parts of the lineup, expanded special programs, and returning free city initiatives. Guest curators include aja monet, KMRU, Los Thuthanaka and Tropical Fuck Storm, each bringing distinct themes from resistance and joy to Indigenous Andean culture and experimental sound. Special programs include 24 HOUR DUB, a continuous 24-hour session at KABUL à GoGo with dub pioneers and newer bass-focused acts, plus club collaborations.

Are venues accessible and what age restrictions apply?

Accessibility differs from venue to venue, so one festival-wide answer does not apply everywhere. TivoliVredenburg has a low-stimulus space, while KABUL à GoGo is currently listed as not wheelchair accessible and without an accessible toilet. Children up to 12 can generally attend with a parent or guardian free of charge, though visitors under 16 are advised to attend with supervision. Night venues have stricter rules with WAS. at 21+ and De Helling and KABUL à GoGo at 18+.

Can I attend free events without buying a ticket?

Yes. The U? city program is Le Guess Who?’s free city program and focuses on Utrecht’s local and creative communities with performances, exhibitions, communal meals, talks and educational activities. The Sound & Culture Summit and Film Program are also freely accessible. For someone visiting Utrecht without a main festival ticket, U? is the easiest way to experience part of Le Guess Who? without paying for a full pass, and it is worth checking even if you have a wristband.
