No other festival offers 250 events with 1000 musicians in ten days.

70,000 visitors and 250 events: Since 1982, the festival has grown to more than 70,000 visitors and over 250 concerts per edition, ranging from intimate lute recitals to large-scale oratorios.

Unique venues: Diverse venues offer unique acoustic experiences ranging from the grand Domkerk and Geertekerk to the state-of-the-art TivoliVredenburg. The Domkerk, Utrecht Cathedral, provides a magnificent Gothic backdrop for large-scale choral and orchestral performances.

Scholarly and artistic depth: This festival is the ultimate pilgrimage for classical music purists and history buffs alike. Whether you are a dedicated connoisseur of the 15th-century Meistersänger or a curious traveler seeking a high-culture autumn retreat, the festival’s blend of scholarly depth and artistic brilliance is unmatched.

Theme-driven curation: Each edition has a theme. Past themes include Music speaks, Gallantry and Giving Voice. The theme shapes lectures, concerts and fringe programming, giving intellectual coherence.

Van Wassenaer Competition and Fringe: The International Van Wassenaer Competition showcases emerging ensembles, while over 60 fringe concerts offer free admission and a platform for young talent.

Lineup / Featured Artists

The festival features prestigious musicians and emerging talent, with world stars to young talent gathering in Utrecht.

Typical artists include:

  • Leading Baroque orchestras and vocal ensembles such as Vox Luminis, Ensemble Correspondances, Ricercar Consort and Tallis-inspired choirs
  • Harpsichord and keyboard masters like Pierre Hantaï, who has performed repertoire by English virginalists, Scarlatti, Bach and Couperin
  • Countertenors, bass soloists and vocal ensembles performing programs like Vocal splendour, Ich habe genug: Bach for Bass, The Three Countertenors and Tallis’ Spem in alium
  • Early music ensembles focusing on Spanish vibes, instrumental and vocal ensembles as part of Tournees

2026 reference included: Giving Voice as theme, with concerts at TivoliVredenburg and Domkerk, plus lectures on Islamic architecture and interfaith peace.

2027 focus: Humanists. This edition explores humanity’s enduring attempt to become more human through art, and through music in particular. Our point of departure is Christian Humanism, embodied by Erasmus of Rotterdam. We follow Erasmus on his travels through Europe, reconstructing the soundtrack of his life. From there, focus shifts to the ideals of Enlightenment as they take shape in works of Rameau.

Human experience remains at the heart, with distinctive expressions like shedding of tears: tears of joy befitting homo ludens, as well as tears of sorrow and compassion. The festival also explores expression of human passions in secular music and religious sensibilities of Pietism. Romantic excess finds place alongside confessions of love and desire, with poetry of Petrarch occupying a place of honour. Human relationships are revealed in bonds between teacher and pupil, patron and artist, while exchanges of letters provide intimate expressions, giving a distinctly literary dimension.
