Overview

Wonderfeel is Europe’s largest outdoor classical music festival, reimagined with the unconstrained atmosphere of a pop festival. Set within a protected nature reserve, the festival invites you to wander between centuries-old trees and discover more than 100 performances across seven stages. Over three days, more than 350 to 500 musicians ranging from internationally renowned soloists to bold young ensembles perform everything from baroque and romantic masterpieces to minimal music, jazz, pop, and world music influences.

The concept was created to break classical music out of the traditional concert hall and make it accessible, personal, and alive. There is no need to choose one stage in advance. Your entrance ticket gives you access to all simultaneous performances, encouraging a unique festival ritual of strolling, discovering, and staying for what moves you. The festival is organized in collaboration with Natuurmonumenten, the Dutch society for nature preservation, and every ticket contributes to the maintenance of the natural monuments. It is a full cultural immersion that also includes poetry, dance, storytelling, music documentaries, nature walks, and a vibrant food program.

What Makes This Event Special

A pop-festival formula for classical music: Wonderfeel uses the snackable, free-roaming model of pop festivals. Instead of selling individual concert tickets, you buy a day or weekend pass and curate your own journey. This removes the pressure of canon programming and allows the curators to take artistic risks.

Music in pure nature: The festival does not happen in a park beside nature, it happens inside it. Stages like Het Veld, Het Bos, Het Nest, De Stek, De Boekenbar, and Het Dorp are spread a short walk apart among beech trees, meadows, and the historic estate landscape. The sound of wind in the trees and setting sun becomes part of the performance.

Intimacy between artist and audience: Musicians consistently report feeling the audience reaction much more directly than in a concert hall. The stages are low, close, and often open-air, creating an atmosphere described by artists as paradise. Audiences sit on cushions, benches, and grass.

For newcomers and connoisseurs: According to festival surveys, 61% of adult visitors hear music they would normally never listen to, 53% never visit other festivals but are drawn by Wonderfeel’s concept, and 74% feel the festival makes classical music more accessible. Over 1,200 children attend each edition.

Sustainability and purpose: From 2025 onwards Wonderfeel takes place at Landgoed Groeneveld. The location is managed sustainably, with local food sourcing, reduced waste, and encouragement of public transport and cycling. The organization is also co-founder of the European Festivals Forest, planting trees in Iceland to address festival carbon footprints.

Lineup / Featured Artists

The lineup for 2027 will be announced in phases through the official channels. Based on previous editions, you can expect a rich mix of orchestras, chamber ensembles, soloists, and cross-genre collaborators.

Wonderfeel Festival Orchestra: The festival’s own orchestra, led by Johannes Leertouwer, is a central pillar each year, often performing large-scale and surprising repertoire.

International soloists and chamber groups: Past editions have featured artists such as Pavel Kolesnikov, Barbara Kozelj, Thomas Beijer, Judith van Wanroij, Fuse, NES, Pynarello, Camille Thomas, Wishful Singing, Tim Kliphuis Ensemble, ADAM Quartet, and Ayanna Witter-Johnson.

Cross-genre voices: Programs frequently connect classical with pop, soul, and jazz. Examples include Spinvis & the Wonderfeel Orchestra, National Youth Jazz Orchestra with Reinier Baas, Remy van Kesteren, and ensembles like Caravan.

New commissions and premieres: Stages like Ongehoord and White Label are dedicated to fresh, innovative creations and world premieres. Wonderfeel commissions new works from composers such as Aart Strootman, Diamanda Dramm, and others.

Spoken word and dance: The program is curated with poets selected by acclaimed writers, storytellers, dancers, and filmmakers. The Queer Notes program, nature-inspired collaborations with ensembles like Sibil•la Ensemble performing Hildegard von Bingen, and music documentaries are regular features.

Kids program: Separate stages present music theatre, interactive workshops, instrument building, and arts and crafts for young audiences, all included in the festival access.

Event Experience

Seven stages, one continuous flow: The seven Wonderfeel stages each have their own character. Het Veld is the grand open stage for orchestral and large ensemble moments. Het Bos offers intimate shelter among trees. Het Nest is for experimental and late-night sounds. De Stek, De Boekenbar, and Het Dorp host talks, poetry, book presentations, and small-scale encounters.

A relaxed festival bubble: Visitors describe the experience as escaping urban frenzy and stepping into a relaxed bubble. You can bring a blanket, wander between concerts, pause for a coffee, join a nature walk guided by Natuurmonumenten rangers, or listen to a poet under a tree.

Food and drink: More than twenty food trucks and the festival’s own restaurant provide a wide selection. Expect local and seasonal menus, vegetarian and vegan options, specialty coffee, and natural wines. You can picnic on the grass between concerts.

Design and atmosphere: The festival is known for its beautiful design, with stretch tents and natural colours that blend into the surroundings, romantic seating areas, and centuries-old beech trees along winding paths. Lighting at dusk transforms the estate into a magical setting.

Family friendly: Entrance is free for anyone 18 years old or younger, though they do need to order a free entrance ticket through the ticket shop. There is a dedicated Kids route and a program on Saturday and Sunday.

Venue: Landgoed Groeneveld, Baarn, Netherlands. From 2025 onwards Wonderfeel no longer takes place at Schaep en Burgh in ‘s-Graveland, but at Landgoed Groeneveld in Baarn. The address is accessible via the contact page on the official website.

The estate: Landgoed Groeneveld is centered around an 18th-century castle with a vast English landscape park, herb garden, and centuries-old beech and oak avenues. It is managed as a nature reserve, offering meadows, ponds, and woodland paths. All stages are within a short mini-walk of each other.

Facilities: The terrain is mostly flat with natural paths. There are compost toilets, free drinking water points, first aid, a festival shop, info points, and covered areas in case of summer showers. The festival provides seating cushions, but many visitors bring their own blanket.

Accessibility: The paths are natural and can be uneven after rain. The organization provides accessibility information and assistance for visitors with mobility needs. Contact the organization in advance for specific arrangements.

Event History

Wonderfeel was co-founded by Tamar Brüggemann and Georges Mutsaerts with the idea of presenting classical music the way people experience pop festivals. What started as a bold experiment has grown into the Netherlands’ largest outdoor classical music festival.

The early editions took place at Schaep en Burgh, Noordeinde 60, ‘s-Graveland, an estate conserved by Natuurmonumenten. Over ten years, the festival expanded from a few thousand visitors to a 9,600-strong audience in 2024, including more than 1,200 children, generating over 48,000 concert visits across a single weekend.

Entering its 11th edition in 2025, the festival marked a new chapter by moving to Landgoed Groeneveld in Baarn. The move provided more space, better ecological integration, and closer proximity to central Netherlands transport hubs. The artistic mission remained unchanged: to give space to artistic choices that complement and are often too risky for seasonal concert hall programming, with a strong focus on young creatives, underrepresented composers, and lesser-known works.

The festival has also launched initiatives like WinterWonderfeel and international spin-offs, and founded the European Festivals Forest in 2021 with co-founder Peter Florence to promote sustainability across European festivals.

Stay hydrated and protect from sun: Bring a reusable water bottle. Free drinking water is available. Sunscreen and a hat are useful on sunny days.

Charge your phone and bring cashless payment: The festival is largely cashless. Ensure your phone is charged for mobile tickets and program updates. Power banks are handy.

Respect nature: Stay on paths, dispose of waste properly, and respect the protected estate. The festival bubble depends on keeping the nature reserve clean.

Attendee Experiences

From a first-time visitor: I came because my partner loves classical music and I never go to concert halls. I ended up seeing eight concerts in one day. Sitting under a tree hearing a string quartet while birds sang was unlike anything I expected.

From a family: We brought our two teenagers. The fact that youth under 18 is free made it an easy decision. They loved the workshops and the food trucks, and we all watched the Wonderfeel Festival Orchestra together at sunset.

From a musician: Pianist Pavel Kolesnikov wrote that summer festivals are usually risky with open air, minimal rehearsals, and food and hippies, but Wonderfeel was a simple and reliable model of paradise. Many artists mention feeling audience reactions much more directly than in a hall.

From a returning visitor: You do not need to be an expert. You wander, you hear a cellist in a small tent, you stay, you discover a composer you never knew. The relaxed atmosphere removes all the formality that can keep people away from classical music.

In addition to music, you will find poetry, dance, storytelling, and music documentaries across the seven stages.

Is Wonderfeel suitable if I never go to classical concerts?

Yes, it is specifically designed for newcomers. The festival uses a pop-festival format where you buy a day or weekend pass and freely wander between stages. Surveys show that 61 percent of visitors hear music they would normally never listen to and 74 percent feel the festival makes classical music more accessible. The atmosphere is informal, with no dress code and no need for prior knowledge.

Do children need tickets and is there a program for them?

All children and youth up to 18 years old receive free entrance, but they still need to order a free ticket through the official ticket shop at wonderfeel.nl. There is a dedicated Kids program on Saturday and Sunday with music theatre, instrument building, arts and crafts, and interactive workshops. How does the festival work with multiple stages at the same time?

There are seven stages spread a short walk apart across Landgoed Groeneveld, with performances happening simultaneously.
