Overview

Waterpop is het gezelligste festival voor jong en oud and is widely regarded as the oldest and most gezellige free festival in the Netherlands. The festival has existed since its inception in 1978 and takes place in the green Hofpark in Wateringen, South Holland. Where the event began with about five hundred visitors, it has grown into a festival where at least twenty-five thousand festivalgoers walk around the Waterpop terrain each year.

Waterpop is a free accessible festival that has been a household name across the Netherlands for almost five decades. Whether you come for music, street theater, children’s activities or the unique atmosphere, Waterpop is for everyone. The organization is run by Stichting Waterpop Festival, based in Wateringen, with nearly 500 volunteers who build, organize and run the festival alongside sponsors.

The festival presents an alternative music program with both Dutch and international acts, attracting crowds of four to five thousand enthusiastic fans per show across multiple stages. It is not a commercial mega-festival but a community festival that has managed to book legendary names while remaining free.

What Makes This Event Special

Completely free: Waterpop is gratis toegankelijk. In a country where major festivals cost hundreds of euros, Waterpop remains free for all visitors. This is made possible by sponsors, volunteers and the Friends of Waterpop donation system.

Longest-running free festival: The Dutch music scene’s biggest free event has existed since 1978. From the first edition to the 49th edition, the festival has kept its identity as a Westland institution.

Community powered: You can help together with almost 500 other volunteers to organize the oldest and gezelligste festival in the Netherlands. The entire festival is built by volunteers, from stage building to bar service.

For all ages: The program includes a children’s corner, street theatre and quirky lineup choices that appeal to teenagers, parents and older visitors at the same time. It is explicitly positioned as a festival for jong en oud.

Hofpark location: The green Hofpark in Wateringen offers a park-like setting with trees, water, shade and open lawns. Unlike industrial sites or muddy fields, the park feels like a large garden party with professional stages.

Discovery focus: Waterpop has a history of booking acts just before they break through, from Radiohead and Faithless in the early nineties to modern indie acts like The Scratch, EUT and High Hi.

Lineup / Featured Artists

Over the decades, Waterpop has welcomed an extraordinary range of artists, from world stars to local breakthroughs.

Historic names include: Radiohead, Faithless, Herman Brood and his Wild Romance, Manic Street Preachers, The Verve, Deus, Krezip, Within Temptation, Candy Dulfer who performed live on stage at Waterpop festival, Urban Dance Squad, Fishbone, and many more.

Recent editions illustrate the diversity:

2023 lineup included: Opus Kink, High Hi, EUT, Kuzko, Hideous, Inge Van Calkar, Ruben Hoeke Band, The Scratch from Ireland, Primaat, Power to the Pipo, Fire Horse, Lo Poloko, Little Hat, MeneerTjes SlodDe & Vos, Marathon

2024 lineup included: OPROER, Roos Blufpand, Bony Macaroni, Splinter, Library Card and other emerging Dutch indie and punk acts, plus the traditional mix of rock and alternative on Saturday

2025 lineup included: Zuster Zonnebloem, Braces, State Power, High Fade and a full program across two days in Hofpark

2026 focus included: Wodan Boys, who were highlighted as Energieke, luidruchtige rockmuziek. That is what you can expect from Wodan Boys. The band was re-invited after having to cancel the previous year, showing the festival’s loyalty to artists.

For 2027, expect a similar structure: one strong international indie/rock headliner, one major Dutch headliner, plus a curated undercard of Dutch indie, punk, hip-hop, funk and singer-songwriter acts. The festival also books street theatre acts, local Westland bands and children’s acts during the day.

Event Experience

Waterpop offers a full park festival experience without needing a ticket.

Music: Two to three main stages plus smaller acoustic corners. The main stage focuses on headliners and energetic rock, the second stage on indie and alternative, and a tent or small stage for heavier and more experimental acts. Sound is professional festival level, with shows attracting between four to five thousand fans per stage.

Street theatre and entertainment: Beyond music, there is straattheater, children’s activities, art installations and a festival market. The park layout encourages wandering between stages, food stalls and theatre acts.

Food and drink: Local food trucks, beer gardens, coffee stands and family-friendly options. Prices are kept reasonable due to the free nature of the festival, with revenue supporting the festival via consumption rather than entry fees.

Family zone: A dedicated kinderhoek with activities, workshops and performances for children, making it feasible to attend with young kids during the afternoon.

Evening atmosphere: As sunset falls over Hofpark, the festival lights up with stage lighting, park illumination and a warm, communal atmosphere. The crowd is mixed and local, with many Westland families who have attended for decades.

Tips Before You Go

Come early for a good spot: The main lawn fills up quickly for headliners. Arrive early to secure a spot near the front or a good picnic spot with shade.

Bring a blanket and ear protection: The park setting invites sitting on the grass, and the music can be loud near the stages. A picnic blanket and reusable earplugs make the day more comfortable.

Plan for crowds: With at least twenty-five thousand visitors, the park gets busy on Saturday evening. Use side entrances and bike parking to avoid congestion.

Attendee Experiences

Attendees describe Waterpop as the most gezellige free festival in the Netherlands, with a warm, local atmosphere that is rare for an event of this size.

Regulars mention that you can see high-quality bands like The Scratch, High Hi and EUT for free, in a park where you can sit under trees with a beer and still hear the music clearly. The mix of international and Dutch acts, combined with street theatre and children’s activities, creates a festival that feels like a village fair and a serious music festival at the same time.

Many visitors have attended for decades, noting how the festival grew from about five hundred visitors to twenty-five thousand while keeping its volunteer spirit. The organization with almost 500 volunteers is frequently praised for being friendly, efficient and well-organized despite the free entry.

The park setting is also highlighted: unlike concrete or muddy fields, Hofpark offers shade, water and green lawns, making it comfortable even on hot summer days.

FAQ's

Is Waterpop Festival really free?

Yes, Waterpop is completely free and has been since it began in 1978, making it the oldest free festival in the Netherlands. Entry to Hofpark and all stages is gratis toegankelijk for both Friday and Saturday. The festival is funded by sponsors, volunteers and donations through the Friends of Waterpop program, so you do not need to buy a ticket in advance.

What kind of music can I expect at Waterpop?

Waterpop is known as an alternative music festival with both Dutch and international acts, focusing on rock, indie, punk, pop and electronic crossover. Past lineups have included major names like Radiohead, Faithless, Manic Street Preachers and The Verve alongside modern indie acts like The Scratch, High Hi, EUT and Wodan Boys. The program also includes local Westland bands, street theatre and children's acts during the day.

Where is Hofpark and how do I get there?

Hofpark is located in the center of Wateringen in the municipality of Westland, South Holland, easily reachable from The Hague and Delft. The park is best reached by bike or public transport, with bus lines from The Hague and Delft stopping near the festival entrances. If you come by car, use P+R facilities and walk or cycle the last part because parking directly at Hofpark is very limited during the festival weekend.

Can I bring children to Waterpop?

Waterpop is explicitly organized as a festival for young and old, with a dedicated children's corner, street theatre and family-friendly activities during the afternoon. The park setting with shade, lawns and playgrounds makes it suitable for families, and many local families attend with children. For evening headliners the volume increases and crowds get denser, so hearing protection for children and planning an earlier exit is recommended.

How can I support Waterpop if entry is free?

Since the festival has no ticket income, it relies on sponsors, volunteers and visitor support to continue. You can support by becoming a Friend of Waterpop with a small financial contribution, by becoming a sponsor as a company, or by volunteering alongside nearly 500 other volunteers to help build and run the festival. Buying food and drinks on site also directly supports the festival, as does respecting the park and keeping it clean.
