Lowlands Festival 2027 – Biddinghuizen, Netherlands
Overview
A Campingflight to Lowlands Paradise, commonly known as Lowlands Festival, is Holland’s biggest and most adventurous cultural outdoor event. The festival presents itself as a true backpacker’s Garden of Eden, transforming the event terrain of Walibi Holland in Biddinghuizen into a temporary township with thousands of inhabitants for a full weekend.
Although the main focus is on music covering rock, pop, dance, hip hop and alternative, Lowlands offers a complete cultural program that includes indoor and outdoor cinema, street theatre, cabaret, stand-up comedy, ballet, literature, visual arts and comic strips. The site features twelve stages, among which are dedicated cinema and theatre venues, all covered to ensure programming continues come rain or shine.
In recent years the festival has attracted around 55,000 visitors and features over 200 acts on more than ten stages. Most stages are housed in large tents to protect spectators from weather, with the largest being approximately the size of a regulation football pitch. The atmosphere is described as intimate and friendly despite its scale, with top notch facilities, a wellness village, and an ever-improving food offering.

What Makes This Event Special
A True Cultural Crossover: Unlike genre-specific festivals, Lowlands was built from the start as a crossover event that places major music acts alongside film, theatre, comedy, literature and visual art in equal measure.
Covered Stages and Comfort: All twelve stages including Alpha, Bravo, Heineken, Lima, Juliet, X-Ray and Echo are covered, so performances continue regardless of weather. This is a core part of the identity and a major comfort advantage.
Festival Infrastructure: Lowlands prides itself on supplying high quality facilities including a wellness village with saunas and hot tubs, flushing clean toilets, showers, a 24-hour area called ArmadiLLow with iconic red and white chimney stacks, and a variety of small food portions rather than typical fast food.
Intimate Township Feel: Despite 55,000 capacity, the site is designed as a small city that appears in the middle of Flevoland polder. Attendees often arrive on Thursday and leave on Monday, extending the weekend into a five-day community experience.
Curated Alternative Programming: The lineup balances heavyweight headliners with cutting edge alternative music, thinkers, dreamers, artists and comedians, making it Holland’s most adventurous outdoor event.
NATO Alphabet Naming: Stages are named according to the NATO phonetic alphabet apart from the Heineken stage named after the main sponsor since 2015, a tradition dating back to 1994 when tents were first named Alpha, Bravo and Charlie.
Lineup / Featured Artists
The lineup for Lowlands traditionally spans multiple genres and is announced in waves throughout spring and early summer.
Headliner Profile: Past editions have featured headliners such as A$AP Rocky, Queens of the Stone Age, Chappell Roan, Billie Eilish, Florence + The Machine, Muse, Foo Fighters, Kendrick Lamar, Gorillaz, Dua Lipa, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, and Rage Against the Machine. The booking strategy places alternative rock, hip hop, electronic and pop acts on the same bill.
Stage-Specific Curation:
Alpha Stage: The largest stage with capacity of 15,000, hosting main headliners and major productions. Succeeded the original main stage and now features a higher, more open arched roof design introduced in 2017.
Bravo Stage: Second main stage for major acts and crossover performances.
Heineken Stage: Focus on dance, electronic and club-oriented programming.
Lima, Juliet, X-Ray, Echo: Dedicated to theatre, cinema, comedy, literature and smaller and new acts.
India, Hacienda, Rode Muur: Additional tents for dance and experimental electronics.
New and Emerging Acts: Alongside headliners, the festival books up-and-coming acts such as Fontaines D.C., Jamie xx, and dozens of Dutch alternative artists. The program includes classical performances from Noord Nederlands Orkest and other ensembles in recent years.
Arts Program: Beyond music, the lineup includes film premieres, street theatre troupes, stand-up comedians, ballet companies, authors and comic artists.
Event Experience
The experience begins before music starts. Attendees cross the iconic improvised bridge over the trunk road that connects the entrance to the campsite, nicknamed the bridge of death because it is difficult to cross with festival gear, now an iconic ritual.
Once inside, the site offers continuous programming from early afternoon until late night. During the day, visitors move between music stages, outdoor cinema, theatre, and comedy. Food options have become progressively better each year with small portions, clean preparation, and diverse cuisines. The ArmadiLLow area remains accessible 24 hours a day, providing late-night shelter and social space with its characteristic chimneys.
At night, Alpha and Bravo host main shows with extensive lighting production. The Heineken stage transforms into a dance venue. Smaller tents host intimate performances where crowdsurfers and close contact are part of the experience. Silent disco headphones were introduced in the early 2000s and remain a late-night option.
The crowd is mixed in age and background. The atmosphere is described as relaxed, with emphasis on good sounds, nice people, and the ability to chill out or party hard as desired. Deposit systems for cups, biodegradable plastics, and wellness facilities reflect a focus on sustainability and comfort.

Event History
Lowlands is a successor to one of the first Dutch pop festivals, A Flight to Lowlands Paradise, organized in November 1967 in Utrecht. That 18-hour event charged 10 Dutch guilders including breakfast and featured experimental theatre, poetry, films and body painting without major acts. A second edition in December 1968 attempted to book Jimi Hendrix and featured Pink Floyd, selling out 18,000 capacity but resulting in unrest.
The modern festival was revived in August 1993 as A Campingflight To Lowlands Paradise by Willem Venema and Mojo Concerts. The first edition took place at Spijk en Bremerberg with only a small stage tent and a larger one, selling tickets at the entrance for 75 guilders. Organizers aimed for 10,000 visitors but 7,000 attended to see Rage Against the Machine and Urban Dance Squad. Weather was poor at 15 degrees with rain.
Growth was rapid. In 1994 tents were named using NATO phonetic alphabet and graphic designer Peter te Bos created the mascot Rapid Razor Bob. Attendance rose to 12,500. By 1995 the festival added theatre tent Delta and comedy tent Echo and sold out for the first time with 20,000 visitors. In 1996 it became a major crossover festival with 31,000 attendees.
From 1998 to 2002 the site expanded across the trunk road via the improvised bridge. Commercial sponsorship began with Delta becoming Dommelsch. Attendance reached 60,000 in 2002 but overcrowding led to reforms by newly appointed director Eric van Eerdenburg.
From 2003 onward innovation included biodegradable plastics, silent disco, deposit cup systems, and moving to the third weekend of August. The X-Ray dome and Magneetbar where visitors could perform were introduced. The festival sold out rapidly in 2007 and 2008. In 2011 tickets sold out within two hours after early sales in November.
From 2013 competition increased with Best Kept Secret and Down the Rabbit Hole festivals. Lowlands adapted by booking more dance acts like Skrillex, Major Lazer and Disclosure to attract younger audiences. In 2015 it did not sell out for the first time since 2004, leading to site adjustments. The Heineken stage replaced Grolsch in 2015. In 2017 designer Hansje van Halem became head of festival identity.
Editions in 2020 and 2021 were cancelled due to COVID-19. Recent years have seen ticket prices increase from 255 euros to 300 euros and then to 325 euros, with rapid sellouts in under 15 minutes. The festival continues as Holland’s most prominent alternative music festival with 55,000 capacity.

FAQ's
What is the camping situation at Lowlands and when do most people arrive?
Camping is included with the standard festival ticket and is located across the trunk road from the main festival terrain, connected by an improvised bridge that has become iconic. Most visitors arrive on Thursday afternoon even though music starts on Friday, and leave on Monday morning, effectively spending five days on site. The campsite includes general tent areas, dedicated camper van areas requiring an add-on, and optional glamping. Facilities include showers, clean flushing toilets, a supermarket, and charging stations, all maintained to a high standard.
How does Lowlands handle bad weather and what should I bring?
All twelve stages are covered with large tents, with the Alpha tent being approximately the size of a football pitch, ensuring performances continue rain or shine. The site itself is flat polder land that can become muddy, so waterproof boots and rain gear are essential despite the covered stages. Attendees are advised to bring both sun protection and rain protection due to changeable August weather that has ranged from 15 degrees with rain to 30 degrees heat. ArmadiLLow provides a 24-hour covered social space with chimney stacks for shelter.
What makes Lowlands different from other Dutch festivals like Pinkpop or Best Kept Secret?
Lowlands was founded in 1993 as a counter to festivals like Pinkpop and Dynamo Open Air, specifically to offer more alternative music and has maintained a broader cultural program than most competitors. While Pinkpop focuses more on mainstream rock and Best Kept Secret on indie, Lowlands combines rock, pop, dance, hip hop and alternative with extensive film, theatre, comedy, ballet, literature and visual arts. Its 55,000 capacity, covered stages, and comprehensive facilities create a small-city feel rather than a traditional field festival, with a reputation for better food and cleaner facilities.
Can I attend Lowlands if I don't like camping or prefer more comfort?
Yes, while camping is the standard and most immersive option, Lowlands offers several comfort upgrades including pre-pitched glamping tents, cabins, and nearby bungalow parks that can be booked through the official site. The wellness village with saunas and hot tubs provides additional comfort during the weekend. For those preferring hotels, nearby towns like Dronten and Lelystad have hotels with shuttle connections, though most attendees still choose camping for the community atmosphere and convenience of being on site for late-night programming.
How is the festival laid out and how do I move between stages?
The festival layout uses NATO phonetic alphabet names for most stages, with Alpha as the largest and most central, making navigation relatively intuitive once the map is learned. All stages are within walking distance across flat terrain, though the bridge between camping and festival can cause bottlenecks at peak times. The site is divided into music zones, cultural zones with cinema and theatre, food courts, and the 24-hour ArmadiLLow area. Signage is extensive and the official app provides real-time schedules and maps, helping attendees plan movements between the more than 200 acts across the weekend.
