Vlieland itself is unique. The island once had two villages, but West-Vlieland was completely swallowed by the sea in the 18th century during a massive storm, with legends saying church bells can sometimes be heard from beneath the waves. Today, despite its small size, Vlieland hosts one of the most distinctive festivals in Europe, bringing contemporary music and arts to a remote, sensitive Natura 2000 location.
What Makes This Event Special
Island Location: Into The Great Wide Open takes place on Vlieland Island, the most remote of the inhabited Dutch Wadden Islands. The island largely consists of protected nature reserve, dunes, forest and beach, creating a paradisiacal atmosphere where festival and nature merge completely.
Sustainability as Driver: Sustainability is the key driver of the festival. The organization embraces the challenge of hosting thousands of visitors in a sensitive environment and every year takes new steps towards the big goal of a circular and climate-positive festival. Initiatives include switching from diesel to second-generation biofuels derived solely from recycled organic waste, solar powered batteries to power music systems, emission-free energy solutions, almost zero waste reduction and responsible transportation of visitors.
Lab Vlieland: The festival initiated Lab Vlieland, an interactive workspace where innovative festival makers, students and progressive companies test sustainable solutions. The island becomes a living lab for self-sufficient and energy-neutral solutions, where materials and residual flows are reused at high quality and transport to and from the island is minimized.
Multi-Disciplinary Program: ITGWO goes beyond just music. Art, literature and film merge with melodious sounds, all under the umbrella of sustainability and innovation. Visitors can enjoy art installations in the forest, film screenings, literary talks and theatre alongside concerts.
Intimate and Family-Friendly: The festival gives visitors a distinctive experience because it is held in a place that includes both village and forest. It is ideal for those with kids because it is family-friendly, with workshops, children’s programs and a relaxed atmosphere that aims at several generations of progressive arts enthusiasts.

The 2026 opening was performed by pupils of De Jutterschool and the Vlieland Seamen’s Choir together with Speelman and Speelman, performing the anniversary song Jutterskind written together with all children of Vlieland, showing the deep connection between festival and island residents.
Curated Stages in Nature: Stages are located throughout the island, from forest clearings to dunes, the village square and beach, each with a distinct sound and atmosphere. The festival poster and campaign design often reflects the uncontrollable factors of island life, especially weather, which becomes part of the experience.
Event Experience
Nature as Venue: Concerts take place in the forest, on the beach, in dunes, in the village of Oost-Vlieland and in intimate indoor locations like Podium Vlieland. The sound of wind, sea and birds becomes part of the performance, and walking or cycling between stages through nature is a core part of the experience.
Sustainable Living Lab: Visitors experience sustainable innovations firsthand, from biofuel-powered stages to solar batteries, circular materials, waste separation and emission-free energy. The festival communicates its sustainability journey transparently, encouraging visitors to participate.
Art, Film and Literature: Beyond music, the festival programs visual art installations scattered through the forest, film screenings, literary talks and theatre performances, creating a holistic cultural experience.
Community and Village Integration: The village of Oost-Vlieland becomes part of the festival, with local shops, cafes and residents involved. The Seamen’s Choir, local schools and entrepreneurs collaborate, creating a warm, inclusive atmosphere where visitors and islanders mingle.
Camping Under the Stars: Most visitors camp on the island, at Stortemelk Campsite and other designated areas, experiencing nights under open skies with minimal light pollution. The camping experience is integral, with communal cooking, beach walks and late-night acoustic sessions.
Weather as Element: When the festival is on an island, some factors cannot be controllable and have immense effects on people’s experiences. Weather is one of those factors. Sudden changes from sunshine to storm are embraced as part of the island adventure, with ponchos, mud and rainbows becoming part of festival lore.

Event History
Into The Great Wide Open started in 2009 with the ambition to drive change in festival production through sustainability. A group of friends from the pop music industry wanted to create their dream festival on an island, combining their love for music, nature and innovation.
The first edition was small-scale, focusing on indie and folk acts in intimate settings. From the second edition onward, the festival has been recurrently sold-out, reflecting its growing reputation for quality programming and unique atmosphere.
Over the years, the festival has hosted notable artists including Balthazar, Berth Orthon, Chic, Tindersticks, Keaton Henson, Miles Kane, Con Brio, Patrick Watson, Savages, Wand, Charles Bradley, Ben Howard, Whitney, Chris Cohen, Amber Arcades, Altın Gün, Faces on TV, The Ex and many more, building a rich concert history that spans indie, rock, folk and electronic music.
In 2016, the festival made a major sustainability shift, switching from diesel to second-generation biofuels to power generators, reducing CO2 from onsite energy production by 85 percent in just one year. This move positioned ITGWO as a leader in sustainable events, inspiring other festivals through Powerful Thinking and Vision for Sustainable Events networks.
The festival also launched Lab Vlieland, turning the island into a test bed for circular solutions, self-sufficient energy and material reuse. Collaborations with Greener Power Solutions, Innofest, Climate Cleanup and other innovators have continued to push boundaries.
Today, Into The Great Wide Open is recognized as a small but influential boutique festival presenting art, music and sustainable innovations, with a loyal audience that returns each year for the distinctive experience of music, nature and creativity.
