Eurosonic Noorderslag Festival 2027 – Groningen, Netherlands
Overview
Eurosonic Noorderslag Festival, widely known as ESNS, is Europe’s leading showcase festival and music conference, held every January in the city centre of Groningen in the Netherlands. The event is a non-profit, European artists only, 100% showcase festival that functions as the key exchange and networking platform for European music.
ESNS is much more than a traditional music festival. Each year the organization attracts over 4,000 professional delegates, including representatives from more than 400 international festivals, alongside over 40,000 visitors who come to discover the next generation of European talent. The program showcases around 350 emerging European artists performing across intimate venues throughout the city.
The festival is divided into two distinct but connected parts. Eurosonic presents the most current and promising European and Dutch acts performing in venues across Groningen city centre. Noorderslag, held on the final day, presents the best, most happening and important acts from the Netherlands and takes place in a sold-out concert venue De Oosterpoort. Together they create a full week of discovery, networking and celebration of new music.

Event History
The foundations for ESNS were laid when Groningen’s Oosterpoort venue hired a new director, Pim van Klink, who had budget to spend on a new festival in the winter holiday break. What began as a small European style battle of the bands between ten Belgian and Dutch acts has grown into one of Europe’s most important music events.
A year after the initial event, acts from all over Holland were invited to play, and the event was called Noorderslag, which means battle of the north. It did not take long for the industry to realize the convenience of a festival concept that allowed agents, promoters and press to see a variety of bands in one night at one location.
Over 31 years, Eurosonic Noorderslag has been widely recognized as the platform for European music. The concept expanded to include Eurosonic as a showcase for European acts and Noorderslag as the indicator for Dutch music. The festival has celebrated 25 years, 40 years and now approaches its 41st edition, each time selling out.
Notable milestones include live broadcasting by NOS since 2008, the launch of the European Talent Exchange Program to support artists after the festival, and the integration of the Music Moves Europe Awards, organized by ESNS and Reeperbahn Festival with support from European music organizations including Liveurope, Yourope, Live DMA, IMPALA, DME, ICMP, IMMF, EMMA and EMEE.
The 40th edition was opened by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands at De Oosterpoort, highlighting its cultural significance. Today ESNS is described as the key exchange and networking platform for European music with a proven track record for helping new acts break into the international music scene.
